ITINERARY
Day 1 Darwin - Cooinda (Kakadu National Park)
We leave Darwin for Kakadu National Park, this fantastic UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a stop at Mamukala Wetland, which allows us to observe thousands of Magpie Geese, we drive to Ubirr Rock in the heart of Kakadu National Park. You'll have plenty of time to admire Aboriginal rock art in the caves and cliffs (the oldest gallery in the world) and enjoy the wonderful panoramic views over Kakadu Park. A tour of Nourlangie Rock, a site of impressive Aboriginal galleries, presents a mix of paintings up to 20,000 years old.
Day 2 Cooinda (Kakadu National Park) - Katherine
After breakfast we start today's tour day with an impressive boat trip in Yellow Water near Cooinda, a popular refuge for various animals in the dry season. You have the unique opportunity to see crocodiles and a variety of bird species up close in their natural environment. After this highlight, we drive south on the Kakadu Highway to the historic town of Pine Creek and reach Katherine in the evening.Day 3 Katherine - Kununurra
We start today's tour after breakfast with a 2-hour boat trip through the spectacular Katherine Gorge. A wonderful experience with magnificent views and the opportunity to admire Aboriginal rock art. We leave the Northern Territory via the Victoria Highway and reach Kununurra in Western Australia.
Day 4 Kununurra - Ord River
Shortly before midday we are picked up at the hotel and taken by bus to Lake Argyle. We take a short break at the historic Durack Homestead Museum, which was built as a replica of the original family homestead and used the original stones of the homestead. We marvel at the huge Lake Argyle from a nearby vantage point. During the 55km boat trip back to Kununurra we experience spectacular landscapes and a variety of flora and fauna. After we marvel at a colorful sunset at the end of the boat trip, we are brought back to the hotel.
Day 5 Kununurra - Bungle Bungle - Kununurra
Today's excursion is an experience of superlatives. It offers an excellent opportunity to experience the unique Bungle Bungle rock formations from the air and on foot. From the light aircraft you will enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Argyle, the Carr Boyd Range and huge cattle ranches. During the landing approach, a wonderful world of sandstone opens up to you. You can reach the impressive Cathedral Gorge by four-wheel drive vehicle and on foot through steep rock domes and bizarre sandstone domes. During your picnic, take in the natural stone sculptures that look like beehives. On the return flight, marvel at the Argyle diamond mine and the rugged hills of the Osmand Range from a bird's eye view. This day is guaranteed to be remembered for a lifetime.Day 6 Kununurra - Wyndham - Halls Creek
The journey continues along the Great Northern Highway, between the Durack Range and the Carr Boyd Range, towards Wyndham. The Grotto is the name of an idyllic swimming pool located at the beginning of a short but picturesque gorge. The pool, surrounded by steep rock walls, is fed by a 15m high waterfall in the rainy season. Telegraph Hill is located in the Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve. Here we enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the dramatic and rugged landscape of Wyndham and the surrounding area as well as Marglu Billabong, which is a bird sanctuary for over 20,000 birds. Five Rivers Lookout in Wyndham, the northernmost town in Western Australia, offers spectacular views of the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack and Pentecost rivers, the Gulf of Cambridge and surrounding mangrove swamps and mud flats. Molly Springs is a beautiful small spring-fed pool with a waterfall. It's a great and shady place to sit in the water and watch the fish, goannas and birds. Drive to Hall's Creek. Here a short detour takes us to the so-called China Wall. The vertical, 5 m high wall made of light quartz is the result of erosion and was not built by human hands.
Day 7 Halls Creek - Derby
Drive along the Great Northern Highway towards the Fitzroy Crossing. Here we cross the mighty Fitzroy River on its way to the ocean. A very special experience awaits you in Tunnel Creek National Park: We will not hike through the park, but wade through it. The path leads in the stream bed of Tunnel Creek through a 750 m long cave system - the oldest in Western Australia - under the Napier Range. The approach to the Windjana Gorge National Park is impressive. Like an insurmountable wall, the vertical cliffs of the Napier Range rise up out of the flat grass savannah. 350 million years ago, a shallow tropical sea covered much of north-west Australia. After the sea slowly retreated, rivers cut deep canyons in the exposed parts of the former reef. Fossils of marine life found in the rock walls of the canyons still bear witness to the geological formation of the region. We drive the last section on the legendary Gibb River Road. It is one of the most famous roads in northwest Australia. Its history began as a purely cattle route along which mounted farm workers drove the huge herds of cattle from surrounding farms to the ports of Derby and Wyndham.Day 8 Derby - Broome
Today we visit Derby's main attraction with a dark past, the Prison Tree. Aboriginal convicts were once imprisoned in the hollow trunk of the old Boab tree. Today the bulbous giant is protected and should no longer be entered out of respect for this place and its history. Pearls grow in the clean, warm and turquoise sea water off Broome, which are among the most sought-after in the world. Pearl divers from all over the world sought their fortune here and made Broome the pearl metropolis of the country. In the only pearl farm in the Kimberley open to visitors, you will learn everything you need to know about pearl farming. In the evening we arrive in Broome. In this lively town, the sun shines from the sky and the moon regularly sends a staircase down to earth.
